Bloodstock New Blood Stage Preview – AIRSTRYKE

Bloodstock New Blood Stage Preview – AIRSTRYKE

In 7 small days the gates open at Bloodstock Festival, MetalMouth chats to Jamie from glam metallers AIRSTRYKE for a quick bite sized pre festival interview.

Airstryke Press 2012

How did you choose your bands name?

Well Kiss, Van Halen and Motley Crue seemed good ones but were already taken. The band was basically born ‘rise of the phoenix’ style from the ashes of Arkayon, this name didn’t suit the Glam metal sounds we were looking for and wanted to do something a little more fun and crazy, adding the freshly reborn sound of the former 80s glories. Airstryke it became.

What’s the most difficult thing you encounter as an emerging band, and how have you overcome it?

Well within just a couple of weeks of our drummer Morgan joining the band, he came down with a bad chest, suspecting an infection. Turned out it was cancer in the form of lymphoma, but in massive credit to Morgan, he battled through treatment and played gig after gig, it kept us all going strong and brought us massively together.

How would you describe Airstryke’s sound?

A mash together of all the great 80’s bands we all have in our cd collections. We basically crossbred NWOBHM and La Glam, we had one crazy baby! What with our members liking an array of bands such as Y&T, Poison, Warrant, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, it was certainly going to be a experiment of sorts.

How did you get to be a part of the festival? (if through Metal to The Masses which area?)

We got a last minute entry to the midlands semi finals and got through to the final at rock city Nottingham. We seemed to turn a few heads in the semis and definitely saw a lot of streaks of guilty pleasures in the eyes of the hardened metal heads! We were overjoyed with the result as they let two bands through to Bloodstock, they were so impressed with all the finalists!

What are the nerves like right now? Is this your biggest ever audience/first festival appearance?

This is our first festival appearance so were really just learning ourselves, you’ll probably have to ask us afterwards but no doubt, we’ll run round the stage like kids at Christmas!

What bands are you most looking forward to seeing at Bloodstock?

Testament, Anvil, Dio Disciples, Alice Cooper, everyone really to gain experience on what to do to improve if we’re honest. Its such a pleasure to be there as an act, because some of the bands have been attending since year 1. Of course it will be funny watching the Dirty Sanchez guys go at it too.

Are there any other up and coming bands out there you would recommend keeping an eye on right now?

To be honest every act we’ve met have all been pretty cool so far and made a few friends and gigs in a short space of time. Iron Python were cool guys, Broken City Saints, zombie glam/shock rock, certainly different. We just seem to gel well with the bands that aren’t afraid to try something different. Don’t be scared to check something a little different out.

Do you have any funny stories from your route to Bloodstock (or any previous times that you have been to the festival) that you would like to share with the MetalMouth readers?

Well one year our guitarist refused to get wet going to the bar, and his logic told him that stripping down to pink hot pants, stuffing £20 down them and running to the bar was the only sensible way of keeping his clothes dry. We’ve had friends break collar bones play fighting, generally a madcap, all guns blazing attitude keeps the fun levels to maximum for us at all times.

Are there any messages that you would like to pass on to your fans?

It isn’t a crime to flash your boobies at us, although its frowned upon when it’s the guys doing it. But if it makes you guys feel good then join the party, you flash those moobs!! Just don’t be afraid to hang your sensible head in the tent before you come to see us Sunday night, anything goes when Airstryke’s in town. It’s Booze O’clock!

Oh, and bring a hangover cure!!
