As Bloodstock quickly approacheth, MetalMouth is giving you a heads up on the New Blood Stage artists, next up? Dark Melodic Power metallers, Gone Til Winter.
How did you choose your bands name?
One summers evening, way back when we were starting out, we were hanging out and decided we needed a new name. We were originally called “Throne” and soon discovered there were a few bands with this name already.
We then proceeded to have a few drinks and by the end of the evening “Gone Til Winter” was the favourite. I am pleased that I don’t remember what the other names were as I think they were awful!
What’s the most difficult thing you encounter as an emerging band, and how have you overcome it?
The main thing (that happens to all emerging bands) is getting lumped in to categories. For us, because we have a female vocalist and keyboardist we get lumbered in with the other female fronted metal bands. Don’t get me wrong, there are some very talented bands out there in this field, we just believe that we have so much more to offer.
How would you describe Gone Til Winter‘s sounds?
Well, we put our description as ‘UK Dark Melodic Power Metal’. We have influences from the likes of Iron Maiden, Dream Theatre, Heart and Kamalot.
How did you get to be a part of the festival?
We actually did a lot of shows around the UK at the beginning of the year and we were lucky enough to be spotted by Simon Hall who gave us a chance.
What are the nerves like right now? Is this your biggest ever audience/first festival appearance?
To be honest I think we are all bricking it! It will be our biggest audience! I am really looking forward to it though as well. It’ll be a lot of fun.
What bands are you most looking forward to seeing at Bloodstock?
There are so many that we hope we get to see all of the ones we like, but we’re mainly looking out for Machine Head, Behemoth, Alice Cooper, Paradise Lost, Grand Magus and Freedom Call. Honestly though, there are just so many to name!
Are there any other up and coming bands out there you would recommend keeping an eye on right now?
Again, there are loads. The Manchester metal scene is so strong at the moment. You should keep an eye on that crowd. We’ve played with the likes of Spires, Awaker, Incassum, Dirty Habit, Absolva, Obsessive Compulsive…there really is so many great bands on the scene.
Do you have any funny stories from your route to Bloodstock (or any previous times that you have been to the festival) that you would like to share with the MetalMouth readers?
Well, no real particular occasion, just something that happens a lot is things to do with Shirezy…one pound a pint 5% porter in Selby springs to mind!
Are there any messages that you would like to pass on to your fans?
The new album is getting down nicely, vocal recordings begin next week. It’ll be out before you know it!
GONE TIL WINTER are playing the Bloodstock Festival on Saturday 11th on the New Blood Stage
