Brighton’s Favourite Heavy Festival, Mammothfest, is back with a meteoric bang in 2015 bringing with it some of the hottest UK rising stars and a whole bunch of international artists to boot.
MetalMouth would like to bring you the skinny on the hot and heavy new talent hitting the Mammothfest stages, some of the best the UK has to offer.
Here’s the lowdown on sludgy distortion mongers, Mother Corona.
Originally formed as Nable in 2006, but after a few small recordings and line up changes the band changed its name to MOTHER CORONA in 2008. Formed by friends David Oglesby and Lee Cressey in the small Oxfordshire town of Didcot. The band’s music is “a melting pot of Heavy- Distorted- Sludged out raw Grooves, Melodic Psychedelia and Spaced out Landscapes”. They were joined by bass player Robert Glen that following summer. The band started to gig locally and make themselves a name on the local underground rock scene sharing stages with bands like Desert Storm, K-lacura, Undersmile, and many other local names.
What would you say has been your best achievement so far as an artist?
Releasing 2 records by ourselves, playing with great bands, and still being friends despite all the turmoil, great art is inspired by what life throws at you
So what have you been up to in the last 12 months that is noteworthy, funny, or just downright interesting?
We released our second full album Reburn in October 2014 on When Planets Collide records. We did a UK tour with Abrahma and Enos in March 2014 which was fantastic, plus our guitarist Lee almost died on that tour which was funny! Hahahaha!!!
How are you promoting yourself as an emerging artist and getting yourself out there?
The internet has been a blessing for independent bands all over the world, bands like us wouldn’t have had a chance back in the day, you have to try and get in touch with people who are in the “industry”, promoters, managers, magazines, all sorts of people. I like to call them gatekeepers, they are the guys who like to think they can make or break you, but the reality is that YOU’RE the only one who can make or break yourself.
What is the band ethos as a whole?
On the surface it may look like we’re a bunch of beer-swilling knuckleheads, don’t get us wrong we are! Haha, but our music does promote free expression, breaking down the walls of uncertainty, and being vulnerable to the bigger questions of life and not being afraid to express that instead of just ignoring it ’cause people may judge you. It maybe a bit refreshing to hear that in metal music at the minute, it has become a little gruff and macho.
What bands are your music ‘For fans of’?
Black Sabbath, Hawkwind, Soundgarden, The Damned
What is your current release, tell me a little about the process, lyrical theme and concept (if any)?
Reburn is our current album, recorded in Jan 2014 at Studio Focus in Lyford, Oxfordshire. We did initially start recording the album in September 2012 but boycotted the session, it took us one day to lay down the initial tracks then a few sessions after for overdubs, very quick, very raw, no fucking about with perfection or anything like that. It kinda sounds like a metal band playing in a garage, it’s Garage Metal.
The general topics on the album are about the modern world, just how we have become so consumed with material excesses, and greed and money and becoming really disconnected with each other on an organic level, but the album has a great weight to it but also a real strong sense of light and positivity.
Do you have a video out? If so, explain what it’s about, who created it, the reason for choosing that particular song..
It’s called Black Acid Morning, it’s a real no frills video, just us in the studio rockin! It was filmed by the guy who owns the studio called Mike Hill, it was filmed to promote his studio and our band really, but we love it for its authenticity. We chose that particular song ’cause it’s short and sweet, and to the point.
Which other bands can you highly recommend to fans to come and check out at Mammothfest?
Desert Storm and Black Skies Burn. Both bands are from Oxfordshire and are very different from one another, but they both rip balls!
Describe how you plan to blow the Mammothfest crowd into next week..what are you bringing to the table in terms of performance and originality and why should fans come and watch you?
Well the drummer’s the lead singer of a heavy rock band so how’s that for originality. Ha Ha,
In all honesty, we are just going to do what we always do. Play our music as loud and with as much passion as possible.
